What
is psoriasis?
Psoriasis
is the result of an immune system imbalance. In psoriasis, the immune
system sends messages to the basal layer of the epidermis, causing
it to reproduce and mature at an accelerated rate (as if in response
to injury even though there is really no injury present). The growth
cycle of skin cells is only three to four days, compared to 28-30
days in normal skin. As these new cells are produced, they begin
to migrate upward toward the surface. The skin cannot shed these
cells quickly enough, so they accumulate in thick, dry patches,
or plaques, on the surface. Silvery, flaky areas of dead skin are
shed from the surface. This process of accelerated skin growth (or
hyperkeratosis) results in the epidermis becoming nearly twice as
thick as normal.
